Our Vision

Quantum communication for a secure digital future

In an increasingly digitalized world, where demand for highly secure communication infrastructures is constantly growing, the Q-net-Q (Quantum Network Query) research project is at the forefront of innovation. Our goal is to significantly increase the security of existing telecommunications networks by integrating quantum communication technologies, in particular quantum key distribution (QKD). This project is crucial because the current infrastructure is increasingly being used as a vector for attack in global conflicts and conventional security technologies are reaching their limits.

Why quantum security is now more important than ever

The ongoing digitalization of the economy, government, and society brings with it a growing dependence on secure communications and network infrastructures. Particularly sensitive areas such as medical technology and critical industrial facilities are now attractive targets for cyberattacks. Ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of transmitted data is therefore of utmost importance. However, current network infrastructures lack the necessary security technologies to meet these high requirements. This is where Q-net-Q comes in: We use the promising approaches of quantum communication to enable fundamental and physically guaranteed security.

Our vision: Integration of QKD into existing ICT networks

The Q-net-Q project focuses on the integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) into existing information and communication technology (ICT) systems. This requires a systematic transfer of know-how and technology between the domains of QKD and ICT. We are developing the necessary interfaces to integrate QKD modules into productive ICT communication networks, taking into account strict IT security aspects. An essential part of our approach is the establishment of four different test fields that address different distances, user densities (urban and rural), and special requirements, such as those that exist in the medical field.

Innovation and perspectives: A contribution to technological sovereignty

The integration and management of quantum keys in real networks with a large number of users is a novelty. The test fields set up in existing networks offer a unique platform for researching combined QKD and ICT systems. Q-net-Q initiates scientifically sound technology transfer and significantly advances research into the integration of quantum communication solutions. We create elementary building blocks for the transfer of QKD technology into real ICT systems and make a significant contribution to the technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe. Through close exchange with the partners of the EuroQCI initiative, we are ensuring that the Q-net-Q test fields can be embedded in a Europe-wide quantum communication infrastructure in the future. This is a crucial step on the path to a secure and resilient digital future for all.
